AMD recently shared its roadmap, offering a sneak peek at the future of its processors. While much of the focus was on server and enterprise AI solutions, the company also revealed some exciting developments in its CPU architecture.
According to the roadmap, we can expect the Zen 6 and the efficiency-focused Zen 6c chips next year. These chips will be built using an "industry-first" 2-nanometer manufacturing process, likely from Taiwan's TSMC, the same company that produces chips for Apple's M-series MacBooks. This is a significant step, as a smaller nanometer size generally means more power and efficiency.
But here's where it gets interesting: AMD is also preparing for the next-generation Zen 7, which is slated to feature a mysterious new "matrix engine." It will also use a next-generation manufacturing node, potentially TSMC's upcoming A16 node. Unfortunately, the exact launch date for Zen 7 is still a bit of a mystery, with AMD only saying it will arrive sometime after 2026.
While the CTO Mark Papermaster presented the roadmap in the context of server-focused EPYC processors, it leaves us wondering what the Zen 6 and Zen 7 will mean for desktop Ryzen CPUs.
However, there's more! AMD's General Manager of Computing and Graphics Group, Jack Huynh, unveiled a separate roadmap for the company's laptop processors. This roadmap highlights a new "Gorgon" chip planned for 2026 and a "Medusa" chip for 2027. The primary goal? To significantly boost AI-workload performance.
And this is the part most people miss... Earlier leaks suggest that Gorgon will use a Zen 5 CPU architecture, instead of Zen 6.
"The future of AI PCs will be built on AMD," Huynh stated during his presentation. The company is aiming for a 3x+ increase in its PC and gaming-related revenue through 2030. AMD is also targeting a 40% client revenue market share in the next three to five years, following 50% year-over-year growth.
But here's a potential point of controversy: Intel is also gearing up for the next generation, including the desktop-focused Nova Lake CPU, expected next year. Intel's new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, stated that the company believes it will have "the strongest PC portfolio in years." This sets the stage for a fierce competition in the coming years.
