Android's NameDrop Clone?! Contact Sharing is Getting EASIER! (2025)

Feeling frustrated by the hassle of sharing contact info on your Android phone? You're not alone! Apple's NameDrop has made it incredibly simple for iPhone users, and now, Android users might finally get a similar experience.

Google appears to be developing a feature called "Contact Exchange," which could be Android's answer to Apple's NameDrop. This new tool, as reported by Android Authority, is designed to make sharing your contact details a breeze, potentially using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. Imagine tapping your phone against another to instantly share your name, photo, phone number, and email – sounds convenient, right?

The groundwork for this feature was first spotted in the code of Google Play Services. References to "Gesture Exchange," "ContactExchangeActivity," and "ndef" (likely short for NFC Data Exchange Format) hinted at the development of a new contact-sharing method.

But here's where it gets interesting: A newer version of Google Play Services allowed for the activation of a contact-sharing interface, giving us a sneak peek at what's to come. While the final name and exact functionality remain under wraps, the intention is clear: to provide an easy way to share contact cards, much like Apple's NameDrop.

So, what might this Android NameDrop alternative look like?

To understand, let's look at Apple's NameDrop. Introduced with iOS 17, it allows users to create Contact Posters – a feature that Google already brought to Android in the form of Calling Cards. When two iPhones are close, users can choose to share their Contact Poster and contact information with a simple tap. This gesture can also be used to start SharePlay for shared activities.

The Android version, though still in development, already includes fields for a photo, name, phone number, and email. Users will have the flexibility to select exactly which contact fields they want to share, with an option to receive information without sharing anything back.

After a successful exchange, Android will display a confirmation screen with the received contact details, allowing users to save the information to their phone and Google account.

And this is the part most people miss... It's not yet known when, or even if, Contact Exchange will be released to the public. However, given Google's tendency to borrow inspiration from iOS features (like Contact Posters), it wouldn't be surprising to see this new feature come to fruition.

What do you think? Will Contact Exchange be a welcome addition to Android? Do you think it will be as seamless as NameDrop? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
