Bears HC Ben Johnson provides update on Kyler Gordon’s injury
Before the Chicago Bears faced the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday, they faced an early setback: cornerback Kyler Gordon pulled a groin in warmups and was sidelined, leaving the team to maneuver without their key nickel back. Despite their best efforts, Chicago couldn’t overcome a late surge and fell 28-21, snapping their five-game win streak. Gordon was expected to play a pivotal role against Packers quarterback Jordan Love, so his absence raises questions about whether he’ll be available for the rest of the season.
Head coach Ben Johnson spoke to reporters on Wednesday prior to practice, addressing Gordon’s status. “To be determined,” he replied when asked about future availability. “I haven’t heard any clear update on the injury over the past couple of days, but after that game, it didn’t look promising.”
This season, the Bears have impressed with a 9-4 record and a strong chance to secure a postseason berth for the first time since 2020. Yet Gordon’s absence has been a recurring challenge, as this marks his third lower-body injury either in practice or warmups. With the injury history and the current setback, his season remains in jeopardy.
Gordon signed a three-year, $31 million guaranteed extension but has only appeared in three games in 2025. He opened the year on the reserve list due to a hamstring issue that kept him out for four games. He returned for two contests before again being sidelined by groin and calf problems for about five more weeks, and now a groin setback after a single appearance. In those three games, he has recorded seven tackles, one tackle for loss, and a fumble recovery.
With Gordon likely to miss additional time, the Bears will lean on veteran cornerback CJ Gardner-Johnson. Gardner-Johnson has delivered notable plays since returning in October, though he had a rough performance against the Packers, allowing several big completions.
