The political landscape in Nigeria is heating up, and the latest revelations suggest a concerted effort to destabilize Governor Hyacinth Alia's administration in Benue State. But here's where it gets controversial: is there really a plot behind the scenes, or are these just political accusations?
Former Nigerian High Commissioner to Namibia, Dr. Terhemen Tarzoor, has issued a stark warning about what he describes as a meticulously financed conspiracy aimed at undermining the current government in Benue. He claims that certain political actors, unhappy with Governor Alia’s developmental initiatives, are orchestrating a covert campaign to throw the state into chaos starting December 1, 2025.
During a press briefing at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) House in Makurdi, Tarzoor revealed that a significant amount of money—around N2 billion—has allegedly been allocated to fund activities designed to tarnish the governor's image and weaken his administration. He further pointed out that two sitting members of Nigeria’s National Assembly are reportedly serving as spokespersons for this scheme.
He detailed some of the alleged elements of this plot, which include launching a campaign filled with false claims of financial misconduct against the government, sabotaging major infrastructure projects like the ongoing underpass constructions in Makurdi and Gboko, and questioning the transparency of the governor’s administration.
But here’s the twist—the plot also involves mobilizing youth groups to stage violent protests in Makurdi, Gboko, and other towns, with the aim of damaging Governor Alia’s popularity and credibility. Tarzoor accused certain media outlets in Lagos and Abuja of being approached to circulate damaging reports and spread false information on social media, all in an effort to paint the governor in a negative light before President Bola Tinubu and the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Additional strategies reportedly include submitting petitions to anti-corruption agencies against influential government officials and filing multiple court cases to distract them from their duties. Tarzoor labeled this entire scheme as 'ignoble' and 'pathetic,' warning that those responsible would ultimately face the judgment of the public and be held accountable.
Addressing rumors about Governor Alia’s health—specifically claims that he is seriously ill or traveling abroad for medical treatment—Tarzoor firmly dismissed these assertions. He assured that the governor remains fully in control of his administration and is wholeheartedly committed to executing his development plans.
"Governor Alia is focused and will not be sidetracked by political games. The divine guidance has always protected his mission, and the people of Benue stand behind his transformative leadership," he emphasized.

Looking ahead, Tarzoor expressed strong confidence in Governor Alia's ability to withstand these political challenges. He also predicted a strong electoral showing for both President Bola Tinubu and the governor come 2027, suggesting that despite the alleged efforts to destabilize the government, public support remains resilient.
