DAF XD & XF Electric Win 'International Truck of the Year 2026' | Zero-Emission Truck Innovation (2026)

The future of trucking has arrived, and it's electric! DAF's XD and XF Electric trucks have just been crowned the 'International Truck of the Year 2026' – a prestigious title awarded to the vehicle making the biggest splash in road transport efficiency. But what makes these trucks so special? Let's dive in!

This award, judged by a panel of 23 leading commercial vehicle journalists from across Europe, considers a wide array of factors. These include technological innovation, driver comfort, safety features, ease of handling, energy efficiency, environmental impact, and the overall Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

DAF's XD and XF Electric models impressed the jury with their remarkable energy efficiency. They also praised the trucks' refined and powerful drivelines, as well as their advanced technical design. The judges were particularly impressed by the long driving ranges these vehicles offer, along with the advantageous LFP battery technology and superior driver comfort.

Florian Engel, chairman of the International Truck of the Year jury, highlighted the seamless performance during test drives, with almost imperceptible gear changes. He also noted the exceptional flexibility offered by the modular vehicle concept, which allows operators to choose from a wide range of battery and axle configurations. "With the new XD and XF Electric, DAF Trucks demonstrates that the combination of a central electric motor and a traditional rear axle can be at least as energy-efficient as a driveline with an e-axle," Engel commented. "Moreover, this DAF configuration provides perfect weight distribution, enabling virtually all use cases to be covered by a single technical platform."

These electric trucks are powered by PACCAR’s advanced EX-D1 and EX-D2 e-motors, offering outputs from 170 kW (230 hp) to 350 kW (480 hp). With battery packs ranging from 210 to 525 kWh, the 4x2 and 6x2 models can travel over 500 kilometers on a single charge. And with smart charging strategies, they can even cover over 1,000 kilometers per day!

Designed for both city and long-distance applications, the XD and XF Electric trucks boast excellent aerodynamics. They also feature a low cab position, ultra-low window beltlines, and advanced digital camera systems, all contributing to superior safety and visibility.

Harald Seidel, DAF president, expressed his pride in this achievement, stating that it underlines their commitment to zero-emission transport. He emphasized the recognition of the vehicles’ efficiency, safety, and driver comfort, considering the award a testament to DAF's dedication to delivering top-notch products and services. But here's where it gets controversial...

Is the combination of a central electric motor and a traditional rear axle the future, or will e-axles still dominate? What do you think about the balance between energy efficiency, weight distribution, and overall performance? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
