From Beginner to British Rowing Indoor Championships: Sally Barbrook's Journey (2026)

Get ready for an inspiring story that will ignite your passion for fitness and challenge your perceptions! Sally Barbrook, a newcomer to the world of rowing, is about to embark on an incredible journey at the British Rowing Indoor Championships.

In an exclusive interview, Fergus Mainland caught up with Sally, who is set to compete in this prestigious event after discovering the sport through an unexpected encounter with HYROX.

The British Rowing Indoor Championships is an intense, action-packed weekend, bringing together fitness enthusiasts from across the globe. It's a true test of physical limits and a showcase of dedication.

But here's where it gets controversial... Some CrossFit athletes, known for their versatility, are known to venture into the BRIC arena, intrigued by the pure power of focused rowing. ATHX, a popular CrossFit competition, will be held alongside BRIC, creating an intriguing crossover.

Sally's journey mirrors this crossover. Just 18 months ago, she set out to conquer a HYROX competition, and now she's two weeks away from her first indoor rowing race.

"I was achieving decent times in the gym, but I had no idea what excellence looked like," Sally shared. "It was a chance encounter with a marathon rower that opened my eyes to my potential. He used me as a pacing partner, and that's when I realized I had a hidden talent!"

Sally's fitness journey is a testament to the power of self-discovery. Working from home had taken a toll, and she decided to take control and explore her capabilities.

The British Rowing Indoor Championships will be her debut, and she's diving in headfirst! Sally will race the 2000m and 500m events on Saturday, and the prospect of sharing the floor with the GB Rowing team is thrilling.

"I did some research and saw the incredible times achieved last year. I thought, why not give it a go? It's a chance to step into a world of dedicated athletes and see what I'm capable of."

And this is the part most people miss... Sally's excitement isn't just about the competition; it's about the community. She's eager to connect with these athletes, learn from their training routines, and understand their fuel sources.

"I'm curious to see how they prepare for competition. Competing is new to me, and I want to learn from the best!"

Sally's determination knows no bounds. During a training session, she not only met but exceeded her Personal Trainer's PB (Personal Best) by a significant margin, despite being 15 years older and shorter in stature.

The duo has been on an enlightening voyage, exploring drag factors, technique, and form. "I'm still working on perfecting my technique," Sally admitted with a laugh.

With half marathons and Deadly Dozen events on her horizon, BRIC has been Sally's primary focus. She's eager to explore where this rowing journey will take her and find her perfect athletic fit.

"I'm excited to dive into something I truly enjoy. Who knows, maybe my next step is learning to row in a traditional boat!"

Join Sally at the British Rowing Indoor Championships on December 6-7, 2025, at the NEC in Birmingham. Will you be there to witness her inspiring story unfold?
