Get ready for an exciting journey into the world of innovation! IIT Kharagpur's Young Innovators' Programme (YIP) is back for 2025-26, and it's bigger and better than ever! This annual competition is a platform for young minds to shine and showcase their scientific prowess. But here's where it gets controversial... it's not just about the winners; it's about the entire journey of discovery and the impact it can have on our future.
The programme aims to ignite scientific curiosity and creativity among school students, offering a unique opportunity to develop real-world problem-solving skills. And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the final product; it's about the process of innovation and the potential it holds.
Competition Timeline:
- Round 1: Online Submission - Deadline: November 30, 2025. Teams must submit an abstract outlining their scientific idea, with the theme being a key focus. The coordinating teacher will upload submissions via the official YIP portal. Results will be announced online and via email.
- Round 2: Semifinals at IIT Kharagpur - Date: January 3, 2026. Shortlisted teams will travel to the institute's campus for a two-day event, where they will present their prototypes, models, or charts. Registration fees for this round will be announced post-Round 1.
- Round 3: Finals at IIT Kharagpur - Date: January 4, 2026. Finalists will deliver detailed presentations to a jury, followed by a Q&A session. Winners will be chosen based on scientific merit, innovation, feasibility, and communication clarity.
Previous editions have seen some remarkable innovations, such as a green water dispenser for disabled users, an affordable herbal anti-pollution mask, the 'Pothole Warrior' for instant pothole repairs, and an AI tool for early oral cancer monitoring. The last edition attracted over 3,500 entries from schools across India and abroad, including the UAE, Singapore, Denmark, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.
Eligibility:
The programme is open to students from Classes 8 to 12. Each team should consist of 2-3 students, along with a mentor from the same school, and a coordinating teacher is a must. Schools can send multiple teams. The event is divided into two divisions: Junior (Classes 8-10) and Senior (Classes 10-12). Students in Class 10 can choose their division during registration.
Participation fees vary: Rs 400 per member for Indian schools, $20 for SAARC countries (excluding India), and $30 for non-SAARC countries. For the competition to proceed to Round 2, a minimum of ten teams must qualify from Round 1.
So, are you ready to unleash your inner innovator? Remember, it's not just about winning; it's about the journey and the impact you can make. Get involved, and let your creativity shine!
