Imagine a bustling Kettering town centre, now experiencing a hiccup in its efforts to keep pedestrians safe from vehicular traffic. The rising bollards, designed specifically to shield pedestrians in this vibrant area, are due for repairs after encountering a malfunction with the traffic control system.
Scheduled for Friday, February 6th, the repair work will unfold in phases throughout the day, kicking off at 7:30 AM on Market Street and concluding at 4 PM on Meadow Road. These bollards were originally installed in May 2025 to transform the shopping district into a fully pedestrian-friendly zone. However, they have not been functioning properly for a while now, causing some frustration among residents and visitors alike.
When these bollards are operational, they allow authorized vehicles to enter by using entry cards or by contacting an operator via a call button. Unfortunately, since they've been stuck in the down position for several months, their intended purpose has been compromised.
A representative from North Northants Council expressed their regrets regarding any disruptions this may cause, stating: "We will be performing essential repairs on the bollards around Kettering town centre this Friday. While we carry out work in each area, access will need to be restricted. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."
The repairs will block access to the bollards at various locations for approximately one and a half hours each:
- Market Street: 7:30 AM to 9 AM
- High Street: 9:15 AM to 10:45 AM
- Lower Street: 11 AM to 12:30 PM
- Gold Street: 12:45 PM to 2:30 PM
- Meadow Road: 2:45 PM to 4 PM
Kettering Borough Council invested around £250,000 in these installations at High Street, Lower Street, Meadow Road, and Gold Street. Additionally, manually operated bollards have been placed at the end of Meeting Lane, while fixed bollards secure the entrance to Wadcroft.
These barriers serve a crucial purpose: they prevent vehicles—including delivery vans and trucks—from entering the pedestrian-only zone during peak shopping hours. When everything functions as it should, the bollards lower within just two to three seconds, ensuring a smooth flow of both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
