Khamzat Chimaev's Unique Fight Week Behavior: Gerald Meerschaert's Perspective (2026)

Gerald Meerschaert Recalls a Strange Pre-Fight Confrontation with Khamzat Chimaev: 'He's Just Doing It for the Love of the Game'

'He's Just Doing It for the Love of the Game'

Khamzat Chimaev is a force to be reckoned with in the UFC, and his willingness to fight anyone, anywhere, at any time has earned him a reputation as a fearless competitor. After his octagon debut, Chimaev went on to win two more fights in the next two months, showcasing his versatility by scoring victories in both welterweight and middleweight divisions. One of his most memorable wins came against Gerald Meerschaert in 2020, where he delivered a jaw-dropping one-punch knockout in just 17 seconds.

However, Meerschaert, who was no stranger to the octagon himself, had a peculiar story to tell about a pre-fight encounter with Chimaev. In an interview with The Casuals MMA podcast, Meerschaert revealed that there was a bizarre confrontation backstage before their fight, which left him perplexed.

'There was too much of a language barrier. He mumbled a lot at the time,' Meerschaert said. 'If he would have interrupted me and was talking crazy shit, that would have been better. But it was just kind of annoying.'

Meerschaert explained that he and Chimaev met during COVID-19 restrictions, and they found themselves in a hallway with Brendan Allen and Chimaev's coaches. 'We got in each other's faces and there's no one around,' Meerschaert recalled. 'In the back of my head, I'm like there's nobody else here so he's just doing it for the love of the game.'

Despite the unusual encounter, Meerschaert acknowledged Chimaev's impressive career, which has seen him remain undefeated with a perfect 15-0 record. He also praised Chimaev's ability to perform regardless of the audience, stating, 'He does this, he walks away and his coaches [are saying] 'oh nice to meet you.' All the most polite [people]. I was just confused. They are so nice, why is he like this?'

Meerschaert's perspective on the situation is intriguing, as he acknowledges that while some fighters need a heated pre-fight altercation to get amped up, he didn't see the need for it. 'I’m like we’re going to punch each other — well you are going to punch me in this case. I wanted to punch him but it didn’t work out that way.'

Despite the fight and the strange encounter, Meerschaert had nothing but respect for Chimaev's career. 'Nothing against the guy,' he said. 'He’s done great. Good for him but it was an interesting fight week.'

This story raises an interesting question: How much does the pre-fight atmosphere impact a fighter's performance? Do these confrontations serve a purpose, or are they simply a result of different personalities clashing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
