A Lenox Twp. man's labor of love has resulted in an extraordinary hot rod, a testament to his dedication and the bond he shared with his father. This unique vehicle, almost 60 years in the making, is a true masterpiece.
Len Palmeri, a retired designer with a background in tool and die making, embarked on this automotive journey with his father, Tony, back in 1968. Together, they crafted a car inspired by a 1929 Mercedes, utilizing a 1956 Chevrolet frame as its foundation.
But here's where it gets interesting: Palmeri's father had a soft spot for 1930s automobiles, and this influence is evident in the car's design. The dual spare tires, a common sight on cars from that era, add a touch of vintage charm.
The car, named "Andare," which means "to go" in Italian, is a reflection of Palmeri's family heritage and the car's purpose. It's a powerful machine, equipped with a Corvette engine and a six-speed transmission, designed for an exhilarating driving experience.
Palmeri recalls the thrill of driving it at 140 mph, an experience he describes as "pretty scary" due to the challenges of maintaining control at such high speeds.
While not suitable for daily commutes, Palmeri often takes the car out for spins and has even embarked on longer journeys, including a memorable trip along Route 66.
The connection between father and son is evident in every aspect of the car. From the steel body, crafted with precision, to the 1936 Ford headlights and Ford Model A taillights, each element tells a story.
And this is the part most people miss: the red pinstriping, a gift from a friend, symbolizes the deep bonds Palmeri and his dad shared over the years.
Palmeri's father tasked him with naming the car, and the choice of "Andare" was a nod to their Italian heritage and the car's purpose. It's a name that perfectly encapsulates the car's essence.
But it's not just about the car; it's about the people. Palmeri believes the best part of owning this unique vehicle is the connections it has helped him forge.
"I always tell people the best part of the car is all the people I meet that would never talk to me if it wasn't for this car," he says.
