Breaking News: Marburg Virus Outbreak in Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 15 November 2025 - We have an urgent health alert from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The Federal Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) have confirmed an outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Jinka, Southern Ethiopia. This is a serious development that demands our immediate attention.
As of 14 November, nine cases have been reported, with laboratory tests confirming the presence of the Marburg virus. The initial suspicion of a viral hemorrhagic fever was raised on 12 November, and since then, the authorities have been working tirelessly to contain the situation.
But here's where it gets controversial... The detected virus strain shows similarities to those found in East Africa. This raises questions about the potential spread and the need for a coordinated regional response. Africa CDC, in partnership with EPHI and other key players, has been instrumental in strengthening Ethiopia's diagnostic and genomic surveillance capabilities. Through their collaboration, they've provided essential equipment, reagents, and training to laboratory personnel, ensuring a swift and effective response to this outbreak.
The core genomics facility at EPHI, with support from Africa CDC and partners like the Global Fund and the UK Health Security Agency, has played a pivotal role in rapid laboratory confirmation. This collaboration has enhanced Ethiopia's overall outbreak readiness, a critical step in preventing the spread of such deadly viruses.
And this is the part most people miss... The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), a leading Ethiopian research institution, has also benefited significantly from Africa CDC's support. Their research and genomics capacity have been strengthened, positioning AHRI to play a central role in this Marburg outbreak. This response goes beyond just containing the virus; it presents an opportunity to innovate and improve Marburg prevention, diagnostics, and treatment, which could have a global impact.
To further enhance coordination, Africa CDC and the Ministry of Health are integrating their Marburg virus response efforts with ongoing mpox preparedness and surveillance. This joint approach aims to optimize resources, accelerate early detection, and reduce the risk of the virus spreading across the region.
Africa CDC Director-General, H.E. Dr. Jean Kaseya, will meet with the Minister of Health of Ethiopia to assess additional support needs and reinforce cross-border readiness. Africa CDC is committed to working closely with the Ethiopian government and its partners to ensure a rapid, coordinated, and effective response.
Stay tuned for further updates as we navigate this challenging situation together. The health and safety of our communities are paramount, and we must remain vigilant and informed.
