In a heartfelt display of camaraderie, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed his genuine happiness for Michael Carrick following the latter's triumphant victory in the derby match. Despite recently not being chosen as a candidate to succeed Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, Solskjaer extended his warm wishes for Carrick’s success throughout the current season.
Carrick was selected to lead the team until the end of the summer, a decision influenced by the belief among senior club officials that his experience as a former England midfielder significantly contributed to effective on-field coaching. This development did not deter Solskjaer from praising his former teammate, who served as a key member of his coaching staff during his nearly three-year tenure as manager starting in 2018. After United's impressive 2-0 victory against their city rivals, Carrick shared, "Yes, I've spoken to him. We’re close. We’ve been through a lot together, so he’s been fully supportive as you would expect."
He added, "He's some man and I respect him an awful lot. He wished us all the best and was happy that we got the right result." Carrick also acknowledged that he can always rely on Solskjaer, stating, "I know he’s there if ever I need him," though he humorously noted, "I’m not one that bothers a lot of people."
As he prepares for the upcoming challenge against Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Carrick plans to collaborate with his experienced coaching team, which includes former England assistant Steve Holland and ex-Real Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate. Although Carrick received much-deserved acclaim for the strategy that led to the victory over Manchester City, he is fully aware that he cannot simply replicate those tactics in the next match.
"It won’t be copy and paste," Carrick emphasized. "I’m never one that likes to say 'same again' because it’s never, ever the same again. Even if you come in at half-time after a strong performance for 45 minutes, the second half is invariably different. We managed the game well last week, and credit goes to the boys for that. However, we must build on this success. If we perform at our best, I believe we have a solid chance to succeed."
