Get ready for a safe and memorable New Year's Eve, folks! The London Ambulance Service (LAS) has some crucial advice for all the revellers out there. With their busiest night of the year approaching, LAS wants to ensure everyone has a great time without any unnecessary emergencies.
Last year, on New Year's Day, the LAS received a 999 call every 10 seconds at its peak, which is a staggering 2,000 more calls than their daily average. That's a lot of action for the ambulance service!
Becky Owen, the associate director of operations at LAS, has some wise words for us. She suggests planning your transportation to and from your event, and most importantly, wrapping up warm because it's going to be chilly out there!
"If you're planning to indulge in some drinks, make sure you have a good meal beforehand and keep some soft drinks handy. We don't want anyone ending their night and starting their new year with an ambulance ride!" Owen advises.
The ambulance service's busiest time is between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on New Year's Day, so it's crucial to be extra cautious during those hours.
Ms. Owens assures us that LAS is well-prepared with about 140 extra staff members on duty for New Year's Eve, both at the call centers and out on the roads. They're working closely with partners across London, including the police, coastguard, and other essential services, to ensure everyone's safety and support.
"We at LAS want everyone to have a fantastic and safe celebration," she adds.
So, remember, folks, plan your night, eat well, stay warm, and use 999 only for life-threatening emergencies. For other incidents, the NHS 111 service and online resources are there to help. Let's make this New Year's Eve a memorable one for all the right reasons!
And here's a little teaser: What are your thoughts on the role of ambulance services during festive seasons? Do you think enough emphasis is placed on their importance, or is it overlooked? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
