The NRL is bracing for a potential player exodus, and the league's boss, Peter V’landys, is not holding back. He's calling out the situation as players consider jumping ship, and the stakes are higher than ever.
In a recent development, V’landys has doubled down on his strong stance against R360, a rebel union league, believing that NRL players contemplating a code switch are being unfairly treated. This comes after two NRL stars, Ryan Papenhuyzen and Zac Lomax, were granted immediate releases from their respective clubs, the Storm and Eels. While the ultimate plans of these players remain unconfirmed, speculation points towards a potential move to R360.
Speaking to Code Sports, V’landys expressed deep concern for players considering this path. He urges caution, highlighting the potential risks involved. "I just feel very sorry for the players… They are being hung out to dry," V’landys stated. He emphasized that these players are being used as "guinea pigs" and should ensure they receive upfront payments and bank guarantees. But here's where it gets controversial... V'landys is clearly worried about the players' well-being and the lack of due diligence from the opposing league.
He further added, "Anyone can make promises. Can they deliver them?" and questioned the duty of care and due diligence being provided. V’landys also reiterated the NRL's warning that players who break their contracts to join R360 could face ten-year bans, signaling the league's determination to protect its players and its future.

Beyond the immediate concerns for Papenhuyzen and Lomax, the situation extends to other high-profile players. Broncos superstar Payne Haas, widely regarded as one of the game's most impactful players, is also reportedly considering a move to R360. V’landys has stated his intention to speak with Haas, aiming to persuade him to stay within the NRL. He acknowledges that he couldn't prevent Lomax and Papenhuyzen from leaving, but he is determined to retain Haas.
"As custodians of the game, we have to protect the fans. The fans want us to do something," V’landys said, emphasizing the league's commitment to its supporters and the sport's integrity. He believes that players are jeopardizing their NRL careers for something they know little about.
