Seiko's 'Turtle' watch is making waves, but not just in the ocean! This iconic dive watch, beloved for its blend of performance and affordability, is now embracing its fan-given nickname in a big way: by helping actual turtles!
This isn't just about a cool watch; it's a heartwarming story of a brand giving back. The Seiko 'Turtle,' originally launched in 1976 with the 6306/9 model, has become a legend. It's known for its distinctive look and has been a favorite among watch enthusiasts for generations. Since 2016, it's been part of the Prospex collection, maintaining its core design while incorporating various movements and subtle dial changes.
Now, Seiko is partnering with the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC), an Australian organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles. Seiko is sponsoring and documenting the recovery of a specific turtle named Kame, which means 'turtle' in Japanese.
To support CTRC and Kame, Seiko has created a limited-edition Prospex SRPM04K 'Kame' watch. Inspired by the beauty of Fitzroy Island, a sea turtle sanctuary near the Great Barrier Reef, this watch aims to raise awareness and funds for the cause. Seiko is donating an undisclosed amount from each 'Kame' watch sale directly to CTRC. The progress of Kame's recovery will be shared on Seiko Australia's social channels, allowing everyone to follow along.
But here's where it gets interesting... the watch itself is a work of art. The 'Kame' boasts a dial with a textured surface that mimics the look of an oil painting, creating the illusion of shimmering ocean water. It features a stunning fumé color scheme, transitioning from bright turquoise in the center to a deep blue at the edges.
Like the popular Prospex PADI 'Turtle,' the minute hand is colored—but instead of red, it's a seafoam green. The hour and seconds hands, along with the hour markers, are treated with Seiko's Lumibrite for excellent visibility. The dial is protected by a Hardlex crystal and framed by a dark blue ceramic dive bezel with a seafoam green 20-minute segment and a lumed pip. A gold-tone bezel frame adds a touch of elegance, mimicking sunlight on the water's surface.
And this is the part most people miss... the Prospex 'Kame' is functionally the same 'Turtle' that the dive watch community knows and loves. It features the signature steel, rounded-off, elliptical cushion case that gave the watch its nickname. It offers 200m water resistance, thanks to a screw-down crown and a screw-on caseback, each numbered in the limited run of 1,000 pieces. The watch comes with a brushed steel three-link bracelet with polished inner edges and an additional dark blue rubber dive strap.
Powering this capable diver is the Seiko caliber 4R36, a reliable automatic movement with a 41-hour power reserve, beating at 3Hz. It can be wound automatically or manually.
Seiko has released numerous 'Turtle' variations, but the 'Kame' stands out for its beauty, capturing the essence of a pristine island paradise.
