Singaporeans Rush to Use Expiring SkillsFuture Credits: A Surge in Course Sign-Ups (2026)

Singaporeans are rushing to make the most of their SkillsFuture credits before they expire, leading to a surge in course sign-ups across the country. This surge in demand has caught the attention of training providers, with some reporting a staggering seven-fold increase in enrolments!

The SkillsFuture initiative, aimed at empowering Singaporeans with new skills, has seen an incredible response, especially as the deadline for using the one-off S$500 credit top-up approaches. But here's where it gets controversial: with so many options available, from artificial intelligence to dog grooming, are people choosing courses that truly align with their long-term goals, or are they just trying to use up their credits before they expire?

Training providers like Ngee Ann Polytechnic have witnessed a spike in interest for hobby and lifestyle courses, with drone piloting and smartphone photography being popular choices. The institute recorded an impressive 2,000 SkillsFuture course sign-ups in the first half of December alone, a significant jump from the 300-350 enrolments seen earlier in the year.

Ms. Lin Xin, director of Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Continuing Education and Training Academy, shared an inspiring story of a learner who completed all 11 modules, even continuing with their own money to finish the course. This highlights the dedication and passion of some learners to develop new skills.

Barbara Lina Lei, a 55-year-old certified aromatherapy instructor and adult trainer, is a perfect example of someone who has utilized her SkillsFuture credits effectively. She is now guiding her son and others to make the most of their credits, exploring courses related to animation and gaming on platforms like Coursera.

Online learning platforms have also experienced a surge in demand, with Coursera reporting a 40% increase in enrolments from Singapore since becoming SkillsFuture-eligible. ReallyLesson, offering Coursera subscriptions, noted the strongest demand for technical and career-focused courses.

Training providers specializing in digital skills and personal development are also witnessing some of their highest spikes in demand. Vertical Institute, offering courses in generative AI and data analytics, reported a 150% year-on-year increase in enrolments, with over 40% of new learners already booking classes for 2026.

Aventis Graduate School, self-proclaimed as the nation's leading SkillsFuture training provider for professionals, saw year-end sign-ups increase fivefold compared to last year. Courses in AI, counselling, cybersecurity, and blockchain are particularly popular, with some January classes already fully subscribed.

Mr. Luke Tessensohn, head of funded courses at Aventis, noted the surge in interest for SkillsFuture credits but emphasized the importance of understanding learners' goals and interests. He said, "We want to ensure Singaporeans are not just taking up courses for the sake of it, but rather, we want to help them align their learning with their long-term aspirations."

So, as the deadline looms, will Singaporeans make the most of their SkillsFuture credits, or will this surge in demand simply be a rush to use up the credits before they expire? The jury is out, but one thing is certain: the SkillsFuture initiative has certainly sparked a learning revolution in Singapore.
