In an electrifying showdown at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup in Dendermonde, Thibau Nys from the Baloise Glowi Lions surged ahead to claim victory in the eighth round, narrowly defeating Tibor del Grosso of Alpecin-Deceuninck and Laurens Sweeck, the current series leader from Crelan-Corendon.
With Mathieu van der Poel absent from the competition, the race unfolded on a rapid, compact course, where riders were closely packed throughout much of the event. Wout van Aert, representing Visma-Lease a Bike, was eager to secure his first win of the season but ultimately fell short, finishing in sixth place after attempting a late attack.
Del Grosso expressed satisfaction with his second-place finish, especially after dealing with a frustrating flat tire late in the race that forced him to chase back into contention. He remarked, "I really hoped I could compete for the win, and it was a tricky race with how fast it was, but I had an unfortunate flat. I was quite happy I could come back into the race for the win. You needed everything on the last lap, and Thibau had more."
On the other hand, Sweeck was pleased to maintain his lead in the overall World Cup standings, increasing his margin from one point over Van der Poel to three points over Nys. Reflecting on his performance, Sweeck stated, "In the end, I tried to take the victory, but I was not good enough. I was already two laps ahead in the race, so I knew I just needed to stay in front to secure the highest place possible."
As the race unfolded, bright sunshine greeted the competitors, but the course remained hard and frozen, setting the stage for a thrillingly fast competition. Many riders stayed bunched together for most of the race, creating a dynamic atmosphere in Dendermonde.
Van Aert, uncertain about his prospects prior to the race due to the starkly different conditions compared to his muddy victory last January, commented, "I prefer a mud-filled race with long running sections, but today will be completely different. Because of the freezing weather, the course is completely dry and it rolls well, as there's some frost in the ground."
The race kicked off with Niels Vandeputte of Alpecin-Deceuninck leading the charge, accompanied by Ryan Kamp and Felipe Orts during the initial lap. It was the Spanish champion Orts who first made a move to break the pack apart, launching an attack at the beginning of lap three, which prompted stronger riders to respond strategically.
Nys quickly closed in on Orts' effort during lap four. As the spotlight shifted to Van Aert, fans had to wait until lap eight to see the yellow jersey competitor take the lead. Van Aert moved forward at the start of the lap, remaining a key contender for the win, until a slowdown in pace during the penultimate lap allowed Sweeck to ascend from sixth place to the front.
Nys, ever vigilant of Sweeck's move, tucked in behind him, looking for the right moment to overtake. Sweeck, feeling the pressure, attempted to disrupt Nys's momentum with calculated pauses, but Nys executed a clever maneuver in a technical section midway through the final lap, securing his victory.
