Whincup's Furious Response to Aero Cheat Allegations
Jamie Whincup, the managing director of Triple Eight, has unleashed a barrage of criticism at aerodynamicist Nick Wirth's claims that the Holden ZB Commodore Supercar cheated during its homologation process. Wirth, in an interview with The Hard Compound YouTube channel, alleged that the ZB Commodore was given an unfair advantage with twice the downforce in race trim, something Whincup vehemently denies.
The ZB Commodore made its debut in 2018, a year before DJR Team Penske's Gen2 Mustang dominated the scene. Wirth's claims, however, suggest that Triple Eight may have had an undisclosed edge.
In a strongly worded statement, Whincup addressed the situation, emphasizing the importance of integrity in the sport.
"While we're fully immersed in innovation and progress, we must also ensure our integrity remains intact and that any media comments are justified," he said. "This week, a supplier we've worked with in the past made comments about their past work, and a local media outlet published a story without giving us the chance to respond or provide evidence."
Whincup expressed his disappointment, stating, "These comments are concerning, and we are bitterly disappointed that they could be misinterpreted, potentially casting doubt on our integrity, which is of utmost importance to us."
He continued, "Triple Eight has always adhered to Supercars' testing processes and gone above and beyond to collaborate with the governing body to achieve technical parity. We would never associate ourselves with anyone or any company that contradicts this. If Nick Wirth's claims are true, he should be banned from the Supercars pitlane."
Whincup's response highlights the sensitivity of the issue, especially for the dedicated staff at Triple Eight and their fans. He concluded, "Our focus remains on racing and creating lifelong memories for our fans this season and beyond."
Triple Eight's return to Ford for 2026 as the Blue Oval's homologation team and engine supplier adds another layer of intrigue to this controversy.
